What is the best thing about your job? – Random Question #1
Posted 18 Feb 2010 - 9 Gratefully received comments
One of the good bits of this whole blogging lark is the interaction with you lot, out there. I love reading your comments and getting a bit of dialogue going. If we didn’t have that element to the whole thing, this blog would basically be me waffling on and on. OK, so maybe that’s the case regardless…

… Anyway, in an effort to get a bit of interaction going I’m going to start just throwing out a random question now and then. Some of them will be design related, others probably won’t be related to anything at all. Don’t be afraid to comment or answer even it it seems completely off topic. I like the idea of a free-form conversation going on in the comments thread.
I did have a bit of trouble coming up with the first question to get the ball rolling, but after a very hard week, it eventually presented itself.
My week has been a bit of a slog, I keep myself pretty busy and this week it’s all beginning to pay off. I managed to finish a very long running project. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you about it (maybe one day), but it has been a large part of my work life for a while now. It’s the sort of project that you think about while trying to sleep. Anyway it’s finally come to an end, or a new beginning, and I can set it free into the world.
I remember the start of the project, last year, when it was just a twinkle of an idea. I’ve witnessed it form in my mind then grow and progress to the point that it has taken a proper ‘real’ shape. The best thing about it is that I have physical proof of the process in my notebooks, scribblings and artwork. This commentary of creation is wonderful.
Which brings me to my question:
What is the best thing about your job?

I'm a freelance graphic designer living and working in Suffolk.
I've been using Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign & Quark Xpress since 1999 but I've been using pens, pencils, paper and most importantly my imagination for a lot longer. I'm always looking for new clients to work with and interesting projects to work on.

I’m with you on this one Ken.
The best part of my job:
a) Making a website live is always gives a great feeling.
b) If it’s a identity/print job its always seeing the finished article fresh from the printers.

Getting something back from the printers can be a double edged sword. It’s either an utter disappointment, or exhilarated relief!

Good point, well made! It can be risky business!
I worked at a litho printers in the past so had the benefit of proofs / checking on press.
Generally I play it safe and only use printers I have a relationship with. If the client doesn’t like the price they can place it somewhere else at their own risk!
We have a Digital press where I work now too so I’m pretty lucky I guess!

I like the initial meetings with clients discussing their ideas, then being able to come back to them after a bit of research and some work, with draft concepts. I find that part of the process quite exciting.

@ Iain
I can see where you’re coming from on that. The beginning of a project can be fantastic. I also enjoy the feeling of putting that first line on a blank piece of paper, or the first line on screen.

The hours I spend doing what I like the most and obviously the pay ^^ยจ

I love the fact that I’m always learning, especially when it comes to coding. Sometimes it can seem like I’m hacking away at something, trying to understand it and make it work. There’s nothing more satisfying that hitting Refresh and BINGO!, everything is working as you planned 2…3…10 hours before!
