One of my ‘blog-ject‘ articles has been republished on the excellent Creative Network: TAXI. They asked me last week if they could use my post on forming a design brief. You can re-read the article here, if you wish!

While you’re there it’s well worth having a good nose around the TAXI site because it contains plenty of helpful resources for creative professionals.

Research – The Never Ending Task

Posted 13 Jul 2010 - No Comments - leave yours now!

Life is all about learning. There is a common saying: “You should learn something new everyday”. Personally, I think trying to learn one thing a day is underachieving.

When you think about the process of ‘learning’ it’s easy for your mind to wander back to those hazy school days where you were bored stiff trying to wrap your head around quadratic equations while watching another class outside enjoying a PE class. It’s very easy to associate learning with boredom and frustration.

The great thing about being a designer is that I find myself constantly HAVING to learn. I need to keep up with new ways of doing things, using different technologies, experimenting with new techniques, acquiring new skills and of course gathering knowledge to fuel new ideas.

Research – The Dirty End of the Design Process

Posted 12 Jul 2010 - 4 Gratefully received comments

I get the impression that a lot of people think designers sit in front of computers pressing buttons, whizzing the mouse around and being rather proud of themselves while they’re at it.

Design Forums Brand Competition

Posted 05 Jul 2010 - One gratefully received comment

Design Forums has started another competition that might be of interest to a lot of you out there.

If you’re looking for a good brief to help hone and develop your skills or you want do do some work that will fit into your portfolio nicely, then give the brief a look.

On this occasion the brief is to develop an identity for a restaurant called ‘The Drunken Goose.’ You can see the full brief and competition thread here.

I would recommend Design Forums as an excellent place to visit, it’s a very friendly community with a wealth of combined knowledge. If you do decide to enter the competition I hope you’ll stick around and join in the fun that’s to be had there.

Why you need a Design Contract

Posted 01 Jul 2010 - 7 Gratefully received comments

A contract is a simple form of protection that any competent business person should have when starting a new project.

It’s an extension of the design brief in that it helps to inform both the client and the designer on what to expect of one another.

A simple design contract (I prefer the term agreement) will outline the basic non-design related elements of the project so everybody knows exactly what to expect for the duration.

This is the final stage of the ‘admin’ part of any project. So far we’ve met with the client, asked all the right questions, written and agreed a design brief. Now all that’s left to do is draw up and sign an agreement to cement the business relationship.
