This is another exciting landmark for me as a blogger. I’ve had an article published on Smashing Magazine. The article is called “There’s no such thing as a bad client.”
I hope you’ll take a look and give it a read, while you’re there please check out the fantastic design resource that is the Smashing website.

Here’s another opportunity for you to have your say, with another one of my random questions.

It’s that time of year again when a new swathe of graduates will emerge from university and rush towards that first step on the design career ladder.
I was hungry for every piece of advice that was offered when I started out. Even now, I’m always interested in the views of others so that I might improve the way I work or approach my career.
So my question is quite simple and very open:
What one piece of advice would you give to another designer?

Creating an online presence on a shoestring

When I was at University the most important thing for me was my portfolio. At the time this was a big black case with clear plastic folders and neatly mounted samples of my work. Over the last ten years it seems that my physical portfolio has become less important than my online presence. While I don’t accept this, and still believe my physical portfolio is as important as ever, I realise that having work available to view online is an important facet of my self-promotion.

If you aren’t a web designer/developer this can be a tricky problem to tackle.

My Life as a Cartoon #27 – 404 Special #2
Posted 17 May 2010 - No Comments - leave yours now!

I thought it was about time I changed my 404 error page. I think of it as a little hidden gem. It might be seen as a lot of effort for something that a lot of people aren’t going to see, but I like the idea of surprising someone when things occasionally go wrong!
Follow this link to see my new 404 page: http://kenreynoldsdesign.co.uk/404
I’ve still kept the old one on file, and have put it back into the My Life as a Cartoon series. If you never discovered it you can see it here.
Let me know what you think of the change, I had fun making it, hope it makes you smile!

Have you ever used a hammer to knock a screw into a piece of wood? With enough brute force it can be done, but the result is never as effective as using a screwdriver.
This is how I would classify my first two attempts at creating my online portfolio.

Eventually common sense kicked in and I decided to use the correct tool for the job, namely someone else that knew what they were doing.
The recent changes to my site once again underlined how little I know about the principles of writing code to build a website. You can read about the changes I’ve made to this site here.

Creative Quotations #3

Here’s another installment of quotations I’ve collected for your consideration. A lot of these quotes are about life in general but I think they apply to designers, creative thinkers and business people alike.
The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. – Allan K. Chalmers
The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one. - Elbert Hubbard
The reason why worry kills more people than work is that more people worry than work. - Robert Frost
Happiness is like jam. You can’t spread even a little without getting some on yourself. – Anonymous
